Tucked away in the far northwest corner of India, Lahaul and Spiti are some of the most remote destinations you can travel to in India today. From the capital city of Shimla, it’s more than 700 kilometers (about 435 miles) to reach these Himalayan regions, accessible by road only during the summer months. Despite being so hard to reach, Lahaul and Spiti remain some of the country’s most beautiful destinations, offering everything from stunning mountain views to centuries-old monasteries and temples.
If you’re looking for a truly unique high-altitude experience, look no further than Lahaul Spiti. This remote region of India is home to some of the world’s highest villages, with an average elevation of 10,000 feet above sea level.
I never thought I’d find myself in a place like Lahaul and Spiti. It’s so different from anything I’ve ever experienced. The closest thing I can compare it to is living in the middle of nowhere. But even that doesn’t do it justice.
In India, the air quality is monitored by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) define the permissible limits of various pollutants in the atmosphere. The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act was enacted in 1981 to provide for the prevention, control, and abatement of air pollution. Under this Act, various standards have been prescribed for different industries.
The emission standards for automobiles are governed by the Bharat Stage (BS) norms, which are based on European emission standards. BS-IV norms were introduced in 2010 and upgraded to BS-VI in 2020.
Setting out on the road to Lahaul Spiti is an adventure in itself. The high mountain passes and remote location make this one of the most inaccessible regions in India. But the effort is well worth it, as you’ll be rewarded with some of the most stunning scenery in the world.
The first thing that strikes you about Lahaul and Spiti is the sheer beauty of the landscape. The soaring mountains, rushing rivers and verdant fields are a feast for the senses. But it’s not just the natural beauty that makes this place special. The people here are some of the most hospitable you will ever meet. They go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need and more.
I have been blessed to travel to some of the most amazing places on earth. But, there is one place that always sticks out in my mind as being truly special and that is Lahaul and Spiti. This high-altitude desert region in the Indian Himalayas is like nowhere else I have ever been. The barren landscape, the cold weather, and the lack of oxygen all make for a very unique experience.
Once the sun has set in Lahaul and Spiti, the night sky comes alive with an array of stars. For those who love sleeping under the blanket of stars, this is the place to be. The best part is that you don’t even need a tent – just find a comfortable spot on the ground and let nature do its thing. Just make sure to bundle up, as it can get chilly at night.
